Colour Doppler Scan

Colour Doppler or Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive test procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the blood flow through the arteries and veins.Doppler ultrasound enables to determine the speed of blood flow within a vessel by measuring the rate of change in its frequency and by colour coding the information.

Diagnosis from Colour Doppler

Colour Doppler is used to determine the following medical conditions:

  • To detect Deep Vein Thrombosis(DVT) – a condition where blood clots form in the leg veins, which further could block the blood flow to the lungs. It can be very life-threatening.
  • Arterial Occlusion ( blocked artery)
  • Aneurysms( bulging artery)
  • Blood flow problems with  liver, kidneys, pancreas, or spleen
  • Unusual growths in your belly, such as tumours.
  • Narrowing of large arteries in the neck leading to the reduction in the blood flow
  1. Clothes: Loose fitting and comfortable clothes with no metal fasteners( zippers, snaps).
  2. Jewellery and other metal accessories to be removed before the scan to avoid interference with the image result.
  3. Diet: Depending on the region where Doppler Ultrasound is performed, the diet restriction would vary
      a) For Stomach Ultrasound: Food or liquid should not be consumed 6 to 12 before the scan.
      b) For Pelvic Ultrasound:  Nearly 1(one) Litre of water should be consumed 1(one) hour, so the bladder is full for the scan.
      c) For Leg Ultrasound: No diet restriction for this test.
